Advocates for Life Skills & Opportunity (ALSO) is a nonprofit organization providing person-directed supported living, residential, and employment services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities since 1997. As advocates, we partner with children and adults in their homes, workplaces, and communities, empowering each person to lead an independent, self-directed life filled with choice, dignity, and belonging.
Our services focus on what matters most: promoting independence, building life skills, fostering meaningful community connections, and supporting job development and employment pathways. We are committed to innovating with assistive technology and advancing person-centered supports that help people live the life they choose.
At ALSO, we believe it is our responsibility to uphold our core values through competent, caring, and high-quality services. This work brings out the bold, the brave, the curious, the passionate, and the compassionate.
When you join ALSO, you join a community of advocates who make a real difference every single day. Together, we create opportunities, open doors, and support people in designing the life of their choosing.
Direct Support Professionals bring our mission to life by supporting people in their daily routines, personal goals, and community involvement. They are advocates for the people we serve and agents of change in the community. DSPs receive on-the-job training while working with people supported in their day-to-day lives.
Program Managers lead teams of DSPs and oversee the day-to-day support provided in ALSO’s services. They ensure high-quality, person-centered supports and help create environments where individuals thrive, grow, and direct their own lives.
Employment Professionals support people experiencing intellectual or developmental disabilities as they prepare for, obtain, and succeed in the jobs of their choice. They promote independence, skill-building, and inclusion in workplaces across the communities we serve.
Children’s Support Professionals empower teens and young adults during key life transitions—such as moving from school to social settings, building independent living skills, or increasing community involvement. They help foster confidence, capability, and meaningful participation every day.
These highlighted roles are just the beginning. At ALSO, we believe in supporting the whole person, and that applies to ALSO team members as well.

Outside of making a difference in the community each day, there are other great reasons to join the team. We were voted one of the top 100 Nonprofits to Work for in Oregon, here are a few reasons why:
“I started as a DSP because I have been in the nursing field for 35+ years. I love helping people and taking care of them. I love helping make a person’s life a little better by just being there to help in any way that is needed. My most memorable day as a DSP is taking someone, I supported to a Jimmy Buffet Concert. He had a blast and kept thanking me for taking him. It was the most awesome Memorial Day seeing the great big smile on his face.”
— Brenda Kysor, ALSO Advocate
“I came to ALSO as a referral from a very close friend (who has since passed away). I was very impressed with the company and the management. I am very thankful to have found a company that cares and listens to their employees’ thoughts and concerns. I love the way everyone works together. My ALSO why would be: I love the comrade, yet the ability to work independently with support and trust from my team. I think as an organization the communication is great and knowledge is power.”
– Angelique Hunter, Direct Support Pro
“I think my passion for what we do has become greater. It’s like my brain never shuts off. I am always out in the community looking at different jobs to find for the people we support. My life and the way I view things have changed. Initially, I thought all we do is take care of people but now I am looking at it an entirely different way. We are teaching the people new skills, promoting independence, and making sure that they are included in their community.”
– Miranda Chatterton, ALSO Advocate 20+ years
