ALSO Residential Services

What Is Residential Care for Adults with I/DD?

Residential care is a type of disability support service where adults with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities live in a staffed, shared home setting and receive round-the-clock support. Unlike in-home support, which assists people in their existing residence, residential care provides both a home and a comprehensive team of support professionals.

ALSO’s residential care homes are real homes in real neighborhoods. Residents share everyday life with housemates, participate in their communities, and receive individualized support that evolves with their needs and goals.

What Our Residential Care Services Include

ALSO uses a wrap-around approach, meaning we look at the whole person and tailor support across every area of daily life. Depending on an individual’s needs and goals, our residential services may include:

  • Medication management and health monitoring
  • Personal care and activities of daily living (ADLs)
  • Behavioral health support
  • Meal planning and grocery shopping
  • Transportation and community access
  • Skills-building for greater independence
  • Support for housemate relationships and social connections
  • Help pursuing hobbies, recreation, and community involvement
  • Goal planning with individuals, families, and ALSO Advocates

Every plan is individualized. What works for one person may look completely different for another, and that is exactly the point.

Our Person-Centered Approach

We Believe in Choice

We Believe in Choice

Choice sits at the center of everything we do at ALSO. Adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities have the right to make decisions about their own lives — where they live, who they live with, how they spend their days, and what goals they pursue. Our team works collaboratively with each individual and their support circle to ensure those choices are honored.

We Support the Whole Person

We Believe in Choice

Home life represents only part of the picture. Connection to one’s community remains essential to a full and meaningful life. ALSO residential staff actively encourage and support residents to get involved in their communities, whether that means attending local events, pursuing employment, taking classes, or simply going for a walk in the neighborhood.

"The most important thing to me is knowing every day, by the end of the day, I did everything in my power to make sure the people we support are happy, healthy, and given the best supports out there."

Real Stories: Life in ALSO Residential Care

Meet Lara

Lara, a resident from Bend, OR, lost her eyesight following multiple surgeries and, through determination, family encouragement, and dedicated ALSO support staff, has regained control of her life. She enjoys hiking, listening to music, and spending time around animals. During COVID, she and her ALSO support staff sewed masks, stayed active, and adopted voice-activated technology to control lighting, blinds, air conditioning, TV, and music.

Meet Holly

Holly, also from Bend, OR, is one of the busiest people you’ll ever meet. She works two jobs, hikes, attends local events, and takes every exercise class imaginable. She is a walking example of ALSO’s person-centered model — a person fully included in and embraced by her community, supported holistically so she can thrive on her own terms.

Who Is Eligible for Residential Care Services?

Residential care services at ALSO are designed for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities who need structured, ongoing support in a home environment. Oregon defines a developmental disability as a severe, lifelong condition that begins before age 22 and causes significant limitations in three or more major life activities, including self-care, communication, learning, mobility, self-direction, and independent living.

Eligibility is determined through Oregon’s Office of Developmental Disability Services (ODDS) and your local county developmental disabilities office. ALSO can help guide you through that process.

How to Get Started with Residential Care in Oregon

Navigating disability services for the first time can feel daunting. Here is a simplified overview of the path to residential care services through ALSO:

  • Contact your county’s Developmental Disabilities office or a Support Services Brokerage to begin an eligibility assessment.
  • Once eligible, a county coordinator will assess your needs and send referral packets to providers like ALSO.
  • ALSO reviews referrals based on openings and fit — including compatibility with potential housemates.
Families typically meet with multiple providers before making a decision. Comparing options is encouraged.
  • Once placed, person-centered planning begins — with the individual and family guiding every decision.
